Should Students Avoid Social Media to Crack Competitive Exams?

The straight and simple answer to this question is YES! Now, hold on! We know a lot of you might feel that we are going to rant about the all-negative stuff about social media. But that’s not what this blog is about.

Did you know that 43% of teenagers feel sad and depressed when people don’t like a post on social media? Did you know that 50% of young adults have a fear of missing out? Yes, we are talking about FOMO here.

This means 43 out of 100 teenagers feel sad about someone not liking their social media posts. So we can conclusively say that social media is a lot about attention. Also, in other terms, a lot of social media is addictive. Right?

Consider this scenario – You are giving a free mock test for NEET online. Suddenly you see a notification popping up on your phone! Someone has commented something on your photo. Can you honestly say that you can resist the temptation of checking the comment and carry on with your free mock test for NEET online? No, you can’t!

That’s what we are talking about! We spend a lot of time scrolling through FB or Instagram. There is nothing bad or wrong with using social media.

In the digital world, we live in, using social media is very much normal. But at the same time, it is important to keep a check on your social media usage, especially when you are someone who wants to crack competitive exams like IITJEE or NEET.

How to keep social media usage in check during competitive exam preparation? 

If you are someone who uses different FB groups to check updates or information on the competitive exam preparation like IITJEE and NEET, then you can opt for limited social media usage.

But remember to use it only for study purposes only. The moment you feel the urge to keep scrolling just for fun, that’s when you need to stop.

When you are giving free mock tests for NEET, simply delete the Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram apps. Yes, initially it will be difficult for you and you might face some withdrawal symptoms.

There could be anxiety because most of the times students or teenagers check social media to check how others are performing or what their peers are posting.

Thus, chances are you will absent-mindedly pick up the phone and search for the deleted Instagram app. You have to understand that you did something good for yourself and even though it is hard, you shall get something good out of it.

Creating a social media Schedule

This might sound counterintuitive but if you give yourself permission to use social media, then it is a great way to discipline yourself.

You can make use of a calendar or a planner to mark a time when you will be using social media. Now, this is a trial-and-error method. But it works very well and helps you to pick a time when you shall use social media for a day.

Make sure your social schedule doesn’t clash with your 10th class test online or online class hours. You have to be realistic while making this schedule otherwise it will not work.

Setting up the right schedule will help you have more control of the time and you shall start to do more productive work instead of procrastinating.

Use Social Media Blockers 

If you are vulnerable to being errant on the use of social media, then you can use social media blockers from Google or Play Store.

With those apps, you can block social media apps from time to time. This is especially helpful when you are giving mock tests for 10th class test online or studying online for competitive exams preparation.

You can measure your screen time with the apps and restrain yourself. There are apps that will show you your daily use of social media and mobile phone usage.

Turn off the phone & leave it out of reach 

If you feel that limiting the screen time is still not effective, then you can try turning off your phone. This will make a difference.

However, if you are the person who unlocks their phone every few minutes, then the better idea is to leave the phone in a place that is out of your reach.

The place has to be far away from where you are studying or taking mock tests for the 10th class test online. You can also ask someone in your house to keep it for you till the mock test is done.

Replace your social media activities with other activities 

We know that replacing something you do more often with something you don’t, is difficult. This is not just for social media but it is also applicable to things other than social media as well.

Perhaps you are spending too much time on the computer watching too many YouTube videos. Instead, you could try to go for a walk or read a book for 30 minutes. Sometimes when you disconnect from social media, it helps you focus on things that are more productive.

You can try a new hobby or spend some more time with your family. You shall start to feel better when you find out more productive usage of your time. The lesser time you spend on social media the less distracted you will be.
